MTBHQ is a light tan solid. MTBHQ is used primarily as a polymerization inhibitor and industrial antioxidant. Its high solubility increase potency at higher temperatures combines to make it more useful in many applicants than substituted hydroquinone. The hindered hydroxyl group also makes MTBHQ an interesting organic intermediate.
